RODNEY BROWN Press Release Courtesy of Rod Wilson

Cranbrook and District Arts Council Benefit Concert

Hot Shots Cafe on Victoria

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011, 7:30 pm

The West Coast-left coast and the East Coast-Maritimes are the bookends of the Canadian music scene with the big city music beat stuck somewhere, but not quite in the middle, around the Toronto / Montreal axis. However, the real geographical center and true north of the Canadian music scene is more likely to be found somewhere around Thunder Bay . Look at the performers, who, at least in their formative years, came out of that area. David Schaefer, the musical director of TV's Tonight Show, and the rock icon Neil Young are the best known graduates of the area. Even Bob Dylan in his early years used to slip across the border from Minnesota to perform in the area.

Also at the 'folky' end of the spectrum are Ian Tamblyn and Rodney Brown, both of whom are thoroughly anchored in the mythology of the area. Rodney Brown was in Cranbrook on Tuesday night with his banjo and guitar to do a benefit performance for the Cranbrook and District Arts Council (CDAC). Rodney and Ian Tamblyn share the same sensibilities with evocative musical portraits of the geography, history and personalities of the Lake Superior North shore, the North West Fur Trade and the associated explorations of the Canadian west. Rodney kicked off the night's entertainment at Hot Shots Cafe on Victoria with Ian Tamblyn's true north anthem "Black Spruce". Switching between claw hammer banjo and his trusty Morgan guitar, Rodney also navigated his way through the very evocative "The Big Lonely". In the same vein he explored the journeys and journals of David Thompson in "Map of Dreams" and Simon Fraser's descent of the Fraser River in the aptly named "Simon Fraser". There were images aplenty of the landscape, the voyageurs, the coureurs de bois and personalities from the past. Special attention was paid to the woman of the west, the 'country wives', in the song "What Would Susan Say".

The concert was to raise funds to cover additional operating expenses of the CDAC. The arts council has been forced to relocate from the building opposite the RCMP offices to a newer site at #104-135 10th avenue  in Cranbrook . The recently vacated site, with its significant structural problems, has been the home of the gallery for the past four years. Water damage and issues of building ownership forced an untimely evacuation at the end of August. Relocation and rental costs will incur significant additional expense that will need to be offset by some very focused fund raising over the remaining months of the year. Having said that the directors are very up beat about the new location and are looking forward to re-opening the Artrageous gallery sometime around mid-November.

For the success of the concert the directors of the CDAC would like to thank Sharon Billey for her untiring efforts to find a suitable performance space; Sherry Jackson and Troy Verdenhalven of Hot Shots Cafe on Victoria and Manoj and Vintee Kaushal for their generous lease arrangements for the new gallery location on 10th avenue .

Join artist Dianne Bersea to work with a powerful artistic tool called the "study".  The study is an excellent way to capture the essence of our inspiration, identifying large shapes and colours , en plein air as finished art or in preparation for indoor work.

This workshop assists artists to:

-  see more clearly

-  identify subject matter

-  simplify the visual environment

-  consider compositional options

-  create quick water media studies

-  respond to the spontaneity of watercolour & water media

-  translate / evolve study to more finished art work.

Daily schedule:  In a vigorous atmosphere of demos and hands-on, participants will create quick, loose sketches (en plein air as weather permits), in a variety of water media while keeping in mind further development in the studio. From our studies and with Dianne's guidance, a series of small works will be created to explore composition, impact, energy flow and colour options. In the process, more finished works will be completed.  Each day concludes with a gallery and discussion.

Level: Some drawing or watercolour experience highly recommended. Sponsored by the Royal Bank of Canada

Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest

September 1 - 3, 2008

We are pleased to announce that the Cranbrook & District Arts Council has sponsored five brave and intrepid local writers in the world's most notorious literary marathon this Labour Day weekend.

The 31 st Annual 3-Day Novel Contest took place on Labour Day weekend 2008 (August 30th“ September 1 st ).

The 3-day Novel contest is notorious as a B.C.-originated, slightly crazy annual event that forces would-be authors to complete a novel in 72 hours, said the CDAC member Pauline Artifacet, but the first prize of having your novel published is so enticing people keep going for it every year. The 3-Day Novel Contest began in 1977 and is open to people of all nations and ages. Each year, people all over the world hole up in their chosen locations to churn out genre-busting books they hope will win the prize. The 3-Day Novel Contest is run by a Vancouver-based organization that exists to run the world's most notorious literary marathon and to publish and promote the winning novel. For more information about the contest please visit its website at www.3daynovel.com .

For more information about CDAC¹s annual contest sponsorship, please call 250-426-4223, email [email protected] or visit the Artrageous Gallery.

Kootenay Country Fair was held this past Sunday, September 7th.  It was a very successful day that was enjoyed by over 2500 visitors.  There were approximately 600 entries in the wide range of categories.

The Cranbrook & District Arts Council partnered with the KCF for the third year and were the sponsors of the Art Section. The CDAC's financial assistance also assisted in providing the wonderful variety of entertainment that happened on an on-going basis all day at the Fair.

The KCF and CDAC wish to thank all those who participated in the Fair and extend congratulations to those who won ribbons.

Many thanks to adjudicators Kirsten Taylor, Mike Redfern and Neal Panton.

David Thompson Centennial Quilts Touring Exhibit & the David Thompson Legacy Art Project by Joseph Cross.

Oct. 22nd -Nov. 17th. The Valley Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Invermere, BC, salute the bicentennial of explorer, surveyor, map maker, and fur trader David Thompson. The concept of the David Thompson Bicentennial Quilt Exhibit was conceived in 2003 and since then many hands, many minds, and many dollars, have resulted in beautiful quilts, draped on a wedge tent frame, that capture the stories and landscape of the Columbia Valley 200 years ago.

Joseph Cross - Over the course of four to six years, Joseph Cross expects to complete approximately 100 paintings related to the David Thompson story. Invited by the North American David Thompson Bicentennials Steering Committee to creat an exhibition of historically accurate, museum quality paintings depicting central events in Thompson's remarkable life.

Also on display, a traditionally made birch bark canoe, by Neil Davidson and replica pre 1840's voyageur style clothing, provided by Robert Kirk.

Artrageous Gallery presents "My David"

A play written and performed by Sharon Wass in celebration of the David Thompson Centennial was presented on Friday, November 16th, at the Artrageous Gallery in Cranbrook. Creating a unique perspective as David Thompson's Metis wife, Charlotte Small and recalls their unprecedented 58 years together, the longest marriage in pre-confederation history.

Congratulations on Artrageous Gallery winning the Platinum Award in the Kootenay Business Magazine’s ‘Best Of Business’ awards for best Art Gallery in the East Kootenays!!! You may already know that Artym (Invermere) was Gold, Trickle Creek ( Kimberley ) was Silver, and The Arts Station (Fernie) was Bronze. It’s nice to get recognition that you’re doing something right!!!

Congratulations again,

Janice Edwards (former CDAC President)

Fire & Ice 2006

The Fire and Ice theme was developed to coordinate with the current Winterlights activities being hosted in Cranbrook. The Fire & Ice show had a total of 77 artworks by 32 local artists and included both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional artworks.

“We’re excited by the quality of work and the enthusiasm of the artists participating in our shows and it’s encouraging to see the level of support brought to us by the community” said Louise Selby, Artrageous Gallery Chair and CDAC Board member. “The Fire & Ice show demonstrates the varied and quality talent among local artists and runaway creativity on the fire and ice theme.

Y-Art, Youth-Art, Young Artists Revealing Talent

For youth in Grade 7 or ages 13 and up, was a great success in 2006!  With over 90 entries and 60+ youth entered in the show, it was the largest youth show yet. The entries were very exciting and included drawing, painting, clay and paper sculptures, photography, collage and fibre art entries. The subject matter was wide ranging with current television culture, nature, portraiture and stuff of wild imagination being featured. The skill level was frequently impressive and the range of styles colours and creativity was inspiring to those of us artists who had the pleasure of viewing the show. Turnout for the reception was exceptionally good and pizza, pop and desert was enjoyed by all.

ARTSPEAK

“Artspeak” is a new project of the Cranbrook & District Arts Council. This public lecture series will explore various topics within the world of art. Its goal is to supply abackground of information that will allow each person to see art with a new perspective and deeper understanding. We hope to help the public understand the history as well as the process that makes each artist and creation unique, and

worthy of contemplation.

“VENUS TO VINCENT – ANCIENT ART TO MODERN MOVEMENTS”

The first lecture with Charleen Stroud, on November 26th, 2006 was an overview of art movements from the stone age to the turn of the 20th century and was an outstanding success. It discussed how each movement was a product of the dynamics and circumstance of the time. As well, it looked at key artists and identifying traits of the subsequent genres.

Watch for future ArtSpeak lectures in the new year.
We invite you to join us for this journey!

Kootenay Country Fair

The Kootenay Fair has been a mainstay in the East Kootenay's since 1976.  The KCF is operated by a board of community-minded volunteers who wish to keep the 'country fair' concept alive for the benefit of all our local communities.

The KCF originally was an agricultural oriented fair, but over the years it has grown and diversified into not only an agricultural experience but a cultural experience, too.  The main focus of the fair is to offer a fun experience for the whole family. This year the Cranbrook & District Arts Council partnered with the Kootenay Country Fair in support of the arts and photography section and would like to thank volunteer Ronda Wood for all of her hard work in making this partnership successful.

The 29th annual Kootenay Country Fair was held on Sunday,

September 10, 2006, at Fort Steele Heritage Town. and the arts community was well represented. This years photography exhibit was the largest ever displayed at the fair and other artistic mediums ranged from pencil, watercolour, acrylic, mixed media, ceramics, carved slate, handmade knives, found art and more. In addition to adult artists, there was also a good turnout from budding junior artists. Awards were given in all categories and public turnout to view the entries was high.  Best Over All in the Art Section was awarded to Janice Edwards, second - Susan Campbell and third - Lloyd Dean.  Honourable Mention: Jos/Don Sacino, Garrison Draper, Julissa Morrissey .

In the Photography Section Best Over All went to Jasmine Osiowy, second Frida Viklund, third Frida Viklund  Honourable Mention: Nelson Wookie

3-Day Novel Writing Contest

The world's most notorious literary marathon took place over the Labour Day weekend 2006 and the Cranbrook & District Arts Council is pleased to announce that five local writers (and arts council members) took advantage of CDAC's offer to pay the $50.00 entry fee. CDAC is also pleased to announce that all five successfully survived the weekend and produced their novel. The 3-day Novel contest is notorious as a B.C.-originated, slightly crazy annual event that forces would-be authors to complete a novel in 72 hours,' said the CDAC¹s Trish Barnes, 'but the first prize of having your novel published is so enticing people keep going for it every year.' The 3-Day Novel Contest began in 1977 and is open to people of all nations and ages. Each year, people all over the world hole up in their chosen locations to churn out genre-busting books they hope will win the prize. Judging of this years entries has already begun and we  wait in anticipation for the results which will be announced in January.

"100 Years of Artistic History"

Cranbrook and District Arts Council’s reception for 100 Years of Artistic History held on Friday June 24 th at the Artrageous Gallery, was a great success.   The exhibition was the brainchild of Louise Selby and was supported by CDAC, who thought that displaying history in the form of art would be a great way to help celebrate Cranbrook’s centennial. There were approximately 80 guests at the reception all who enjoyed listening to the live music performed by Arne Sahlen of Kimberley while they viewed the exhibition.   Historical stories of Cranbrook were presented by Mountain Mama and then the guests were treated to a story about local artist John Crago who was at one time a well known country and western singer.  The visitors enjoyed listening to a number of his hit songs including,   "Hi Deedle Dee Dee ” and reminiscing with Crago about his musical career. Selby was excited and stated, “It was one of the best shows we’ve had and we all had a great time exchanging stores and learning about the history of Cranbrook”

The exhibition featured artwork by many local artists as well as art of previous residents.   The show was a mix of paintings, photographs, pottery and fabric art.    Each piece of artwork was labeled with a story not often found in the history books.   The subjects of the artwork were varied and cover logging, railroading, heritage buildings, family history and a lot more.

Cranbrook Centennial Sculpture Press Release

As part of the Cranbrook & District Arts Council’s 30th Anniversary in 2003, a decision was made to mark that milestone and to enhance the celebrations of the City of Cranbrook’s Centennial in 2005 by presenting the city with a special gift of a “Centennial Sculpture” to commemorate 100 years of Artistic Development. The city was then approached and it was decided that the “Centennial Sculpture” would be placed in front of the new Cranbrook Public Library to be freely enjoyed by all citizens for generations to come. Until such time as the library is constructed, the panels will reside in Cranbrook City Council Chambers. The sculpture takes the form of three 5’x 3’ wooden panels, sculpted to depict the development of the many art forms in which our citizens participate. Local painter Glenda Toffolo was enlisted to create the original design and local sculptor Bob Kirk was asked to come on board as an advisor for the project. Under Glenda and Bob’s directive, local sculptor’s Vee Toffolo and Ryan Ackinson undertook the carving aspect.CDAC would like to thank VisArt 2004 sponsors Tembec Industries, Galloway Lumber, BDO Dunwoody, E.K.
